The ex , Real Madrid and Three Lions star described it as a "dream" come true and said it was a "personal" challenge to build his own club.

The unnamed side will be the 22nd team playing in America's Major League Soccer division but it won't compete until at least 2016.

The site of the stadium for Golden Balls' team is yet to be decided but the 38-year-old revealed the project will not use any public funding.

Speaking at a press conference in Miami, Mr Beckham said: "For me, I wanted to create a team that we can start from scratch.

"Everything I have done throughout my career has been very personal and like this one it is a very personal one. I want to make it my own team."

Miami was meant to be the site of an MLS team with plans lead by Spanish giant Barcelona but that fell through in 2009.

Mr Beckham described the Florida city as a "vibrant and passionate" area which he said is "ready for football."

He added: "This is a dream.

"If someone had turned round to me at 11 and said that you would play for Manchester United, Real Madrid, England and the Galaxy then I wouldn't have believed them.

"I have lived the dream."

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said that Miami is the perfect home for the MLS's new team.

He said: "The world's most popular sport is coming to the world's hottest city.

"Soccer is the undisputed international sport.

"We're very grateful that David Beckham and MLS have chosen Miami as the site of their next franchise and we think it will be their most successful franchise."

Mr Gimenez said negotiations begun last week surrounding the creation of Mr Beckham's team.

Mr Beckham played in the MLS when he moved to LA Galaxy from Real Madrid in January 2007.

He played at the club until 2012 and helped the club to win the MLS Cup two times.

He moved to French side Paris Saint-Germain in 2013 and retired from football at the end of the season after the club clinched the Ligue 1 title.
